When people tell me that I was born to be an entrepreneur I have to smile and agree with them.

I love everything about being an entrepreneur: the challenges, the independence, the thrill of success, the immense sense of pride as you watch your company grow. It’s exhilarating! Being an entrepreneur is a passion that we live, breathe and feel to our very core. I can’t imagine being anything else.

Tales of an Enterprising Young Woman

My leadership abilities emerged at an early age as I rounded up my fellow elementary schoolmates and told them that they were going to act in a play and I was going to direct! By the time I got to high school, I fully understood the laws of supply and demand, as I was able to parlay my neatly organized, complete study notes into $10-a-pop student “must haves.”

Therefore, it was to no one’s surprise that, fresh out of college, I went into business for myself. At the age of 22 I opened a pet food and supply store. It was an amazing experience.  From balancing the books to creating advertising – I did it all! In my first year I expanded, offering pet grooming and dog training services as well as creating an adopt-a-pet program. After a few years, I felt I needed something more challenging, something that would help develop my skills and put me on the cutting edge. I sold my business, and ventured into something new. I went to work for a bustling and expanding dot-com company.

While I was soaking up as much as I could learn about the possibility and potential of the Internet, my father, a successful entrepreneur in international shipping, commercial real estate, and most recently the car leasing industry, was looking for someone to run his car rental business. He needed someone with excellent management skills and customer service skills as well as someone who could handle a wide array of tasks that included Web site marketing, data reports and handling Small Claims Court issues. He was also looking for someone he could trust. So, in 2001, I went to work for my father. In the two and a half years that I was there, the company went from being a local vehicle rental company with 18 cars to being a car rental and leasing company with over 100 vehicles on the road, and a branch office in Ottawa.

Think Locally and Act Globally

While working for my father I attended a YES entrepreneurial annual conference and –whamo- it hit me: the WENS concept. It seemed so perfect. It was everything that I believed in and everything that I loved. I wanted to be able to share the amazing support that I had received from my family and friends with other entrepreneurs and I wanted to create a place where all these talented women could gather and discuss business or whatever else was on their minds.

Even though the emphasis would be on business, I wanted to recognize that women are not just defined by their job description or company mission statement.  Women have so much going on in their lives that I knew this new concept had to be different from all the other business networking groups out there. It had to address the whole person. I would lay awake at nights thinking, “Fun activities, hmmmm…hikes, cocktail parties, power-breakfasts! Yeah!!”

I also wanted WENS to work here in Montreal as well as appeal to women across North America and around the world. This meant developing a Web site and making sure it contained relevant content that spoke to today’s modern woman.

WENS started out slowly in our first year, with the occasional networking event here and there while the concept grew into a business.  In August of 2004, I incorporated the Women’s Entrepreneurial Networking System and launched WENScentral.com

The WENS tagline is Women in Business, Embracing Life. This means everything to me. I encourage you to go out there and take on the day, knowing that a close-knit community of amazingly talented women supports you. If we work together, we can help one another succeed. Not only do I believe this, I know it to be true. I could never have succeeded without the dedication of my family, my friends, and the women of the WENS organization.

Sherry Thacker: Up Close and Personal

So now that you know all about my business background, how about a little about the woman outside of the WENS organization?

One of my proudest achievements was to have a solid understanding of finance from a young age. At 22 I bought my first house as well as set up my first RRSP account. I’m an active online trader and can say with all honesty that I know where every penny I have earned has been spent.

Fitness also plays a major role in my life as it helps me feel invigorated and energetic. When I workout, I relax and think more clearly.

I love all kinds of animals and have two very affectionate toy poodles and a parrotlett. I also adore horses, and own a beauty. Riding her on open country trails is one of my passions in life. I see in a horse many of the same traits I admire in people – intelligence, energy, a strong sense of spirit, a fierce independence and a gentle soul.

There you have it.  Now that we’ve met, please introduce yourself to me at the next WENS get together, and tell me about your ambitions and dreams and how we can make WENS the best networking and support group for women- in Montreal and around the world!
